ABSTRACT
Luminescent Tentacles is an interactive installation inspired by waving tentacles of sea anemones in the depths of the ocean. Comprised of 256 shape-memory alloy actuators, the elongated forms move in response to hand movements. Further accentuating the movement, the tip of each actuator softly glows like a bioluminescent organism. Each actuator, or tentacle, is activated by three shape-memory alloy wires, giving the tentacle the flexibility to bend in six directions through the combination of three currents. Employing principles of fluid dynamics, the control application replicates the movement of water ripples. Luminescent Tentacles also includes sounds, prompting the viewer to create music while using hand movements to stimulate the movement of the tentacles, thereby offering an experience similar to interacting with sea anemones.

Luminescent Tentacles: A Scalable SMA Motion Display
UIST '16 Adjunct: Adjunct Proceedings of the 29th Annual ACM Symposium on User Interface Software and TechnologyThe Luminescent Tentacles system is a scalable kinetic surface system for kinetic art, ambient display, and animatronics. The 256 shape-memory alloy actuators react to hand movement by fluid dynamics and Kinect. These actuators behave like waving ...
Waving tentacles 8×8: controlling a SMA actuator by optical flow
SA '15: SIGGRAPH Asia 2015 PostersWhen we see the wriggling movement and the shape of a tentacle like the sea anemone under the sea, we feel an existence of a primitive life. The goal of this research is to realize the expression of a kinetic artwork or interactive artwork such as waving ...
Fabrication of luminescent carbon nanotubes
Single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) were fabricated by chemical vapor deposition on patterned SiO"2 surfaces using ethanol as the precursor. These SWNTs were suspended between SiO"2 pillars or stripes and were featured by strong luminescence in the ...
