Abstract

This volume contains the proceedings of the 13th International Conference on Semantic Systems, SEMANTiCS 2017. SEMANTiCS is the annual meeting place for professionals who make semantic computing work, who understand its benefits and encounter its limitations. Every year, SEMANTiCS attracts information managers, IT architects, software engineers and researchers from organisations ranging from research facilities, NPOs, through public administrations to the largest companies in the world.

A Snapshot of Ontology Evaluation Criteria and Strategies

Ontologies are key to information retrieval, semantic integration of datasets, and semantic similarity analyses. Evaluating ontologies (especially defining what constitutes a "good" or "better" ontology) is therefore of central importance for the ...

Game Character Ontology (GCO) A Vocabulary for Extracting and Describing Game Character Information from Web Content

Creating video games that are market competent costs in time, effort and resources which often cannot be afforded by small-medium enterprises, especially by independent game development studios. As most of the tasks involved in developing games are ...

Specification of Semantic Trajectories Supporting Data Transformations for Analytics: The datAcron Ontology

Motivated by real-life emerging needs in critical domains, this paper proposes a coherent and generic ontology for the representation of semantic trajectories, in association to related events and contextual information, to support analytics. The main ...

Ontology-guided Job Market Demand Analysis: A Cross-Sectional Study for the Data Science field

The rapid changes in the job market, including a continuous year-on-year increase in new skills in sectors like information technology, has resulted in new challenges for job seekers and educators alike. The former feel less informed about which skills ...

Multi-core Meta-blocking for Big Linked Data

Discovering matching entities in different Knowledge Bases constitutes a core task in the Linked Data paradigm. Due to its quadratic time complexity, Entity Resolution typically scales to large datasets through blocking, which restricts comparisons to ...

Adaptable Interfaces, Interactions, and Processing for Linked Data Platform Components

Currently, we are witnessing the rise of new technology-driven trends such as the Internet of Things, Web of Things, and Factories of the Future that are accompanied by an increasingly heterogeneous landscape of highly modularized devices and pervasion ...

IDOL: Comprehensive & Complete LOD Insights

Over the last decade, we observed a steadily increasing amount of RDF datasets made available on the web of data. The decentralized nature of the web, however, makes it hard to identify all these datasets. Even more so, when downloadable data ...

Integrating Ireland's Geospatial Information to Provide Authoritative Building Information Models

Building Information Modelling (BIM) is a key enabler to support integration of building data within the buildings life cycle and is an important aspect to support a wide range of use cases, related to building navigation, control, sustainability, etc. ...

SwissLink: High-Precision, Context-Free Entity Linking Exploiting Unambiguous Labels

Webpages are an abundant source of textual information with manually annotated entity links, and are often used as a source of training data for a wide variety of machine learning NLP tasks. However, manual annotations such as those found on Wikipedia ...

Semantic Annotation of Heterogeneous Data Sources: Towards an Integrated Information Framework for Service Technicians

Service technicians in the domain of industrial maintenance require extensive technical knowledge and experience to complete their tasks. Some of the needed knowledge is made available as document-based technical manuals or reports from previous ...

Good Applications for Crummy Entity Linkers?: The Case of Corpus Selection in Digital Humanities

Over the last decade we have made great progress in entity linking (EL) systems, but performance may vary depending on the context and, arguably, there are even principled limitations preventing a "perfect" EL system. This also suggests that there may ...

Matching Natural Language Relations to Knowledge Graph Properties for Question Answering

Research has seen considerable achievements concerning translation of natural language patterns into formal queries for Question Answering (QA) based on Knowledge Graphs (KG). One of the main challenges in this research area is about how to identify ...

Counting to k or how SPARQL1.1 Property Paths Can Be Extended to Top-k Path Queries

While the volume of graph data available on the Web in RDF is steadily growing, SPARQL, as the standard query language for RDF still remains effectively unusable for the basic task of finding paths through the graph between selected nodes. Property ...

SMJoin: A Multi-way Join Operator for SPARQL Queries

Join operators are particularly important in SPARQL query engines that collect RDF data using Web access interfaces. State-of-the-art SPARQL query engines rely on binary join operators tailored for merging results from SPARQL queries over Web access ...

research-article
Supporting virtual integration of Linked Data with just-in-time query recompilation

Virtual data integration takes place at query execution time and relies on transformations of the original query to many target endpoints, where the data reside. In systems that integrate many data sources, this means maintaining many mappings, queries ...

Trying Not to Die Benchmarking: Orchestrating RDF and Graph Data Management Solution Benchmarks Using LITMUS

Knowledge graphs, usually modelled via RDF or property graphs, have gained importance over the past decade. In order to decide which Data Management Solution (DMS) performs best for specific query loads over a knowledge graph, it is required to perform ...

Benchmarking Faceted Browsing Capabilities of Triplestores

The increasing availability of large amounts of linked data creates a need for software that allows for its efficient exploration. Systems enabling faceted browsing constitute a user-friendly solution that need to combine suitable choices for front and ...

Semantic Similarity based Clustering of License Excerpts for Improved End-User Interpretation

With the omnipresent availability and use of cloud services, software tools, Web portals or services, legal contracts in the form of End-User License Agreements (EULA) regulating their use are of paramount importance. Often the textual documents ...

Towards a Semantic Outlier Detection Framework in Wireless Sensor Networks

Outlier detection in the preprocessing phase of Knowledge Discovery in Databases (KDD) processes has been a widely researched topic for many years. However, identifying the potential outlier cause still remains an unsolved challenge even though it could ...

Siamese Network with Soft Attention for Semantic Text Understanding

We propose a task independent neural networks model, based on a Siamese-twin architecture. Our model specifically benefits from two forms of attention scheme, which we use to extract high level feature representation of the underlying texts, both at ...

Linked Data Reactor: Towards Data-aware User Interfaces

Most of the existing Web user interfaces (UIs) are hard-coded by their developers to address certain predefined types of data, and hence are blind to the semantics of data they are dealing with. When talking about unstructured data or data without an ...

Semantic Annotation for Enhancing Collaborative Ideation

Enhancing creativity has been paid a lot of attention recently, especially with the emergence of online collaborative ideation. Prior work has shown that, in addition to the exposure of diverse and creative examples, visualising the solution space ...

Investigating the interpretability of hidden layers in deep text mining

In this short paper, we address the interpretability of hidden layer representations in deep text mining: deep neural networks applied to text mining tasks. Following earlier work predating deep learning methods, we exploit the internal neural network ...
