DIY Tech + Engaged Student Workers = Low Cost Proof of Concept

Published: 11 September 2018 Publication History

Abstract

Given limited resources and time, the expense associated with acquiring emerging or unproven technology can be hard to justify. Not all emerging technology works as expected, and those who successfully lobby for limited resources can run the risk of being blamed for wasting limited resources when a pilot fails or purchased equipment does not work as expected. The growing popularity of the Maker Movement and student interest in Do It Yourself (DIY) technology projects have provided a win-win situation at Lewis & Clark that has allowed us to experiment with technology that would have otherwise been out of reach. In this poster, I will show three of our projects and talk about how we've learned that even when the project does not work as expected, the student engagement that results from the collaboration often make the time and expense of even failed attempts worthwhile.
