A Historical Ontology of Semi-automatic Specification Extraction from Romanian Language

Published:15 March 2019Publication History

ABSTRACT

The increasing need for ontologies with practical results and the difficulties of manual construction guide us towards methods that propose automatic and semi-automated techniques for creating ontologies. The article presents a conceptual method for building ontology for historical documents aiming to support historians and researchers to organize metadata, search for relevant factors, extract information and derive new knowledge for localized metadata from documents.

We envision its use for educational purposes and for the benefit of the community through several aspects, such as scientific utility, accessibility to documents from the late medieval period to explore events or personal histories of 14-16 centuries.

As a case study, we implemented a semi-automatic method for extracting instances from a category of Romanian documents that generate a historical ontology. The results are evaluated on the basis of the need for an automated tool comparable to those found in the literature for other languages.
