Functional Decomposition of Web Services for Visualization on Tactile Displays for Blind Users

Published: 08 September 2019 Publication History

Abstract

Blind and visually impaired people can only use the services offered on websites with increased effort, or partly not at all. Despite recurring operational steps for individual actions, each website is structured differently and can also change dynamically. This makes it difficult for blind users to identify relevant elements using technical aids such as screen readers. In our analysis, existing web services have been functionally categorized and sorted by relevance according to different statistics of use. In a second step, the most relevant services were manually broken down into their basic functions. On this basis, these functions can be automatically identified at run time by means of pattern recognition, and can then be displayed in a uniform way on a tactile display. This allows for a consistent handling of web services and thus significantly increases their usability forimpaired user groups.
