ABSTRACT
In this paper, a pattern language for improving foreign language skills when studying abroad, which describes effective practices to improve language skills, is presented. This pattern language comprises 39 patterns, which are classified into three different categories: Place to Speak, Opportunity Building, and Thinking in the foreign language. It was developed from interviews conducted with college students and graduates who had studied abroad when they were in junior high school or high school. The process of creating this pattern language is described and five of the 39 patterns, namely, Active Questioner, Favorite TV Show, Personal Word Book, Reading while Listening, and Thorough Rewriting are presented. Furthermore, an experience chart of using this pattern language is provided.
