Enhancing Students' Academic Performance through Teamwork and Classroom Response Systems: Case Study with Chinese Students

Published: 16 October 2019 Publication History

Abstract

Teamwork methodology and classroom response systems have been used in several educational contexts with positive effects. These systems are aimed to increase active engagement in the classroom and to improve the academic performance. In this paper, the authors present an initiative to implement these methodologies in a Chinese higher education context. The effects of implementing new learning methodologies on student performance and classroom participation compared to lecture-based learning is evaluated on a case of study. The aim of this study was to examine the effectiveness of teamwork and classroom response systems (well-recognized teaching and learning strategies), applied in a mechanical engineering subject, in the academic performance of Chinese students who receive their teachings in Spanish. The study was conducted in a quasi-experimental design. The target group was all third-year students (n = 71) from School of Mechanical Engineering in Xiangtan University for three consecutive academic years. We compared their academic performance in two subjects, one that implements two methodologies (teamwork and response systems in the classroom) and another with the conventional lecture-based method. The results obtained by the current study showed higher student engagement and a significant improvement in the subject in which the new methodologies were applied.
