Integration of participatory approaches, systems, and solutions using IoT and AI for designing smart community: Case studies from India

Published: 13 November 2019 Publication History

Abstract

The present era witnessed the encroachment of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in all aspects of human life and it is changing the living conditions. By discovering new ways of using ICT for economic, social and cultural progress, communities around the world are transforming into smart communities through addressing the needs of their inhabitants. The key verticals that define a smart community include smart governance, smart energy, smart building, smart mobility, smart infrastructure, smart technology, smart healthcare, and smart citizen. Internet of Things (IoT) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) are bringing in smartness to all these key verticals with the participation of different stakeholders. This talk will focus on discussing the unique requirements and challenges in building and implementing the smart city solutions in a few case scenarios in India in the thematic areas of energy, water, environment, disaster, skill development, livelihood, etc. It will also demonstrate how the interplay of different factors such as social, economic, political, and technological has contributed to shaping these solutions to provide improved quality of life, enhanced resilience, optimal resource utilization, empowerment of the community and achieving sustainable development.
