The Use of Turnitin to Teach Academic Integrity in Essay Writing Coursework

Abstract

Academic integrity is the basis of educational experiences. Built upon six values: honesty, trust, fairness, respect, responsibility, and courage [3]. Academic integrity shapes students' character during their study. By so doing, once they finish their formal education, it is expected that those values are fully internalized in their daily life. In teaching academic writing, such as: essay, Turnitin is an online software which can help lecturers in teaching academic integrity. It matches students' work submitted to Turnitin with other online texts on the internet and helps the lecturer to trace students' originality in writing. This study aims to describe how Turnitin as is used as a tool to give students' feedback in essay writing coursework in order to teach them academic integrity.
