An application of GA and EDA for passive in-building distributed antenna systems

Abstract

The continuous growth in mobile data traffic has made it increasingly difficult to rely on outdoor base stations to support the traffic generated indoors. A passive in-building distributed antenna system (IB-DAS) provides indoor data coverage by connecting antennas to a base station through coaxial cables and passive components. This paper focuses on the automated design of IB-DAS based on the real-world requirements of a telecom service provider. Particularly, it presents a binary representation based solution to the vertical design of the DAS problem and presents initial results on the performance of 4 binary Evolutionary Algorithms (EAs). The aim is to incorporate better-performing algorithms into a DAS network planning tool, used by our industrial partner.
