AR train: combining SLAM with a marker detector for AR applications in static and dynamic environments

Published: 27 May 2020 Publication History

Abstract

Simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) has been applied to various fields. In particular, when a map generated by SLAM is loaded in augmented reality (AR) applications, virtual objects are correctly placed in real environments. However, most SLAM technologies assume static environments. We propose a simple and efficient tracking system that integrates SLAM-based tracking module with a marker detector. Our system localizes the camera on a static map while simultaneously tracking moving objects that have markers attached to them. Then, a static map, a camera, and moving objects can be unified into the same world coordinate system.
