Semantically Aware, Mission-Oriented (SAMO) Networks: A Framework for Application/Network Integration

Published: 10 August 2020 Publication History

Abstract

With advances in programmable data plane, networks are far more flexible with configurable network functionality. At the same time, applications have also become increasingly complex, with diverse quality-of-experience requirements. We outline a Semantically Aware, Mission-Oriented (SAMO) networking framework for application-network integration. SAMO incorporates a per-packet, host-application-to-network-application signaling mechanism, enabling networks to quickly adapt to the changing network state in accordance with application semantics. It is designed for "unmanaged" environments, targeting many industrial Internet-of- Things (IoT) and military environments and applications.
