A scheme for RAID-6 Scaling Based on EVENODD

Published: 06 August 2020 Publication History

Abstract

In recent years, the technology of cloud computing and large data has a good development. Data has an explosive increment of tendency. Storage system, as an infrastructure, is important more and more. RAID that is a widely used storage system has high data reliability and scalability. With the growth of data and we need to increase capacity via adding new disks. It has become an effective method to expand the original storage capacity. The RAID-6 storage system that has two parity chains can increase reliability and it is convenient to add new disks. In order to make RAID-6 storage system meet efficient scaling requirement. This paper proposes a scaling scheme based on EVENODD code for RAID-6 storage system- ECS. Through real experimental data, it can be found that ECS scheme can reduce the amount of data migration to satisfy the requirement of minimal data migration. Compared with the Round-Robin scheme, this scheme reduces the amount of data migration of 79.05-86.35% and shortens the total data migration time of 63.1-68.2%.
