Abstract

The computer algebra community lost one of its pioneers when Jacques Calmet died on 7th April 2019 aged 77. Born in Marseille, he studied physics at the University of Aix-Marseille where he received his Ph.D. in 1966 and his Doctorat-és-Sciences in 1970. He was from 1965 to 1988 first a researcher, then a research director with the French CNRS. Until 1981 he was mainly working in physics at the Centre de Physique Théorique de Marseille, then he moved to Grenoble to work first at IMAG and then at LIFIA more in the field of computer science. During this time, he spent repeatedly longer spells at foreign universities and research centres like the Universities of Utah and Delaware in the USA, the University of Karlsruhe, Germany, and the CERN Theory Division in Geneva, Switzerland. In 1988 he moved permanently to the University of Karlsruhe where he was a professor of computer science until his retirement in 2007.
