The Development of Anwar's Hole Braille System (AHOBS) for Students with Visual Impairment

Published: 25 April 2021 Publication History

Abstract

Visually impaired students are those with impairment or difficulty with their visual ability. This condition affects the emotional development, social development, behavior development, and especially the self-development need. The first research showed that 78.5% people with visual impairment had difficulty in accessing computer and 21.5% could operate "speaking computer" with JAWS application. The difficulty they faced was due to the absence of Braille keyboard for its high price and most of those students learnt to operate computer in the age of 12 years old. They were still having difficulty in typing by using Braille keyboard. The aim of this research was to assist students with visual impairment in accessing computer easily by developing Anwar's Hole Braille System (AHOBS). The method used in this research was Research dan Development (R&D). R&D was conducted to develop computer Braille keyboard by using hole system with specification tried out in limited scale, broad scale, and expert validation in the field of assistive technology for visually impaired children. The result of this research was then analyzed and showed a significant result on the aspects of the ease of the usage, readability of the keyboard, efficiency of the technology, and the development of the students' velocity in accessing computer. It can work properly for windows and MacOS
