Challenges and Solutions to Reliable Operation of HVDC Transmission Systems

Published: 17 May 2021 Publication History

Abstract

HVDC transmission plays an important role in West to East Power Transmission Project because of its unique technical advantages. Reliable operation of HVDC projects is an important factor to ensure the safety and stability of the power grid. This paper introduces the overview of HVDC projects under the jurisdiction of China Southern Power Grid EHV Power Transmission Company(EHV company), analyses the challenges and risks in the operation and management. Based on the operation and maintenance experience of HVDC projects for nearly 20 years, this paper introduces the achievements of HVDC reliability management and control from the perspectives of current equipment and new equipment. Finally, the future work of improving the reliability of HVDC operation is also considered and prospected.
