Deriving Heart Rate and Respiratory Rate from ECG Using Wavelet Transform

Abstract

ECG machines are vital for monitoring patients with heart diseases and abnormalities. The need for portable health devices has risen due to technological advancement, it is very essential to have one at home for early detection of diseases. Heart rate and respiratory rate can tell a patient what abnormalities they might have in their bodies. Custom ECG was developed to tell patients their heart rate and respiratory rate without going to hospitals to save costs. The inputs are gathered from sensors that are placed on vital points for a 3-lead ECG device. The output is then displayed to an LCD screen to show the derived heart rate and respiratory rate. The custom ECG device can provide accurate heart rate and respiratory rate estimation by using Fast Fourier transform and Wavelet transform. During the data gathering, the device obtained an accuracy greater than the FDA-approved standard. The Fast Fourier transform, and Wavelet transform have shown good results for heart rate and respiratory rate. This device is suitable for long-term monitoring and is suitable for home medical service.
