ABSTRACT
Data visualization is a reliable tool for professional communication practitioners for synthesizing and presenting data to a variety of audiences. However, data visualizations have a range of accessibility concerns including: visual acuity, color/contrast difficulties, color blindness and size/scale issues. Alt-text is not enough to make these visuals accessible and therefore more advanced web coding techniques, such as the Scalable Vector Graphic (SVG) format should be used to create data visualizations for the web. The use of SVG allows for greater coded semantic and contextual information to be added to data visualizations resulting in graphics that can be better interacted with by users with a variety of accessibility software.

The Accessibility of Data Visualizations on the Web for Screen Reader Users: Practices and Experiences During COVID-19
Data visualization has become an increasingly important means of effective data communication and has played a vital role in broadcasting the progression of COVID-19. Accessible data representations, however, have lagged behind, leaving areas of ...
Chart Reader: Accessible Visualization Experiences Designed with Screen Reader Users
CHI '23: Proceedings of the 2023 CHI Conference on Human Factors in Computing SystemsEven though screen readers are a core accessibility tool for blind and low vision individuals (BLVIs), most visualizations are incompatible with screen readers. To improve accessible visualization experiences, we partnered with 10 BLV screen reader users ...
COVID-19 highlights the issues facing blind and visually impaired people in accessing data on the web
W4A '21: Proceedings of the 18th International Web for All ConferenceDuring the COVID-19 pandemic, dissemination of data on the web has been vital in shaping the public's response. We postulated the increased prominence of data might have exacerbated the accessibility gap for the Blind and Visually Impaired (BVI) ...
