Performance analysis and comparison for TDOA and DTDOA

Abstract

Demand for real-time and high-resolution positioning systems increases dramatically as the self-driving technology goes into application rapidly since the accuracy of GPS cannot meet the requirement. Non-satellite positioning technology is an attractive one in some traffic scenarios, in which an important problem is how to calculate the target position. Time difference of arrival (TDOA) is a common method to the problem, and differential time difference of arrival (DTDOA) proposed lately. The motivation of this paper is to investigate and select an appropriate one for our developed prototype positioning system to be used in tunnel scenarios where there is no GPS signal. TDOA or DTDOA has its advantages and disadvantages. In this paper, the principle of TDOA is briefly described first. Based on the Chan algorithm, we derive the formulas to calculate the position under DTDOA for our case. The analysis and performance of TDOA and DTDOA are presented with the objective of reference.
