A Matter of Identity? Designing Personas for the Development of Makerspaces for Girls with Migration Background Considering Complex Social Identities: Eine Frage der Identität?

Abstract

English – The present study deals with the construction of personas considering complex social identities. The context is a requirements analysis for the participatory development of makerspaces for 10-16 year old girls with migration background. With their hands-on approach, makerspaces offer a low threshold access to STEM subjects, especially for children and teenagers. However, these offers do not reach girls with migration background sufficiently yet. Ten semi-structured interviews were conducted with girls aged 10-14 years to gather data of the target group. Using a multiple step process considering complex social identities, we identified four identity structures. Personas were designed based on these identity structures. The process of persona creation is depicted exemplarily and further use of the personas in the context of “STEM education/makerspaces” is discussed.
