ABSTRACT
In the present study, Tibetan population data were extracted from the first, fourth, and sixth national censuses, and a database of the county-level Tibetan population in China was built based on ArcGIS 10.3. The spatial distributions of the Tibetan population in inland China for the years 1953, 1982, and 2010 were mapped on this basis. The spatial diffusion characteristics of the Tibetan population in inland China from 1953 to 2010 were analyzed. The results demonstrated that, from 1953 to 2010, the Tibetan population had rapidly expanded in inland China and formed spatial agglomerations in a few regions. Nearby and jump diffusions were observed to be the dominant spatial expansion modes. Further, the spatial diffusion of the Tibetan population in inland China was observed to shorten the inter-ethnic spatial distance. However, while the clustered-living approach can help social adaptation of the Tibetan population, it can also lead to inter-ethnic social–spatial isolation, thereby bringing both opportunities and challenges to the ethnic work in the new era.
