Influence of Attractiveness as an External Stimulus on Perceived Benefits of Uniform Virtual Backgrounds: A Case Study of Online Meetings in Indonesia

Published: 03 November 2021 Publication History

Abstract

Work or study from home due to Covid-19 has forced people to shift from offline meetings to online meetings. Interestingly, along with the use of online meeting platforms, the utilization of the platforms’ virtual background feature also became prevalent. Participants were often obligated to change their virtual backgrounds with the one provided by the meeting organizer so they would use uniform backgrounds. We see this as an opportunity to have more understanding of how people, particularly in Indonesia, behave towards technology. Drawing from the previous literature, we investigated this phenomenon by proposing that perceived benefits of using a uniform virtual background is driven by environmental stimuli. The survey was conducted on 302 persons and examined using Covariance-based Structural Equation Modeling (CB-SEM). The outturns showed that attractiveness as an environmental stimulus has direct positive influence on perceived benefits. As the conclusion, users of online meetings recognized that the attractiveness of uniform virtual backgrounds gave them positive benefits. Implications of these findings are discussed in the paper.
