Calculation of Brain Cortical Complexity Based on T1-weighted Imaging by Edge Fitting

Abstract

The complexity of human cerebral cortex has important clinical value for the prediction, diagnosis and prevention of certain diseases. In this paper, we mainly used edge extraction and curve fitting to assess the cortical complexity by calculating the surface fractal dimension of the cerebral cortex with the help of the standard deviation of distance (SDD) and the layer-by-layer perimeter area ratio (PAR) based on T1 images. The results showed that the SDD and PAR revealed some advantages over the traditional box-counting method in computing the surface complexity of simulated 3D graphs. Moreover, when the two methods were applied to the human cerebral cortex in vivo, it was found that the SDD was more sensitive to individual differences. This study shows a new method for human brain cortex complexity calculation, providing a technical support for morphological analysis of human brain in clinical stage.
