Rural Students at Second-Tier Urban Chinese Universities: Struggling between the Past and the Future

Published:25 July 2022Publication History

ABSTRACT

Based on Bourdieu's theory of habitus, this study explores the academic and extracurricular experiences of rural students at second-tier urban Chinese universities to understand their habitus transformation process. A mixed research method has been employed to collect data from semi-structured interviews and surveys at X second-tier urban Chinese universities. The past habitus of rural students during secondary education, namely their examination-oriented mindset, has negatively influenced their social networking capability at urban universities. More importantly, the majority of rural students in second-tier urban Chinese universities are desperately longing for self-improvement, mainly including preparation for graduate education.
