ABSTRACT
This paper describes the hospital admissions regulatory process in the Porto Alegre Health Network, based on Ministry of Health policies to Brazilian public health system. Porto Alegre is the Capital of Rio Grande do Sul state. Being an important process to ensure timely and qualified access to hospitalization for patients, the municipality of Porto Alegre has been working to develop strategies and to monitor hospital occupancy in the city. In order to accomplish a better organization, Porto Alegre developed an information system, called Gerint Hospital Admissions Management, which supports the regulatory process of hospital admissions to the Brazilian public health system in the city. Porto Alegre is a referral in healthcare among other cities in Rio Grande do Sul state. One of the major challenges facing the city is to ensure universal and equal access for the whole population to these services. The outstanding features of the system are the integration services provided to hospitals and the sharing of information.
