ABSTRACT
Student entering the workplace are now, more than ever, expected to have a sound theoretical knowledge of the job as well as the skills to function in the workplace. However, very few of the academic programs in the BCOM programmes at North-West University, South Africa, include Work-Integrated Learning to expose students to the real, business environment. Therefore, alternative avenues need to be created to enable students to have a work simulated experience. Through simulated scenarios the Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences (F-EMS) at the North-West University aims to simulate the real business environment with the development of a mobile serious game and simulators associated with various workplace scenarios. The term “sims” refer a broad genre of experiences. These experiences can include computer games for entertainment and immersive learning for formal academic programmes. Through Design Science Research (DSR) various iterations will be executed to create the sims (simulations and serious games) for the BCOM programmes. This paper provides an overview of the conceptualization and development plan of creating a mobile serious game, called F-EMS Incorporated. The focus of the mobile game will be to: (i) model the integration of programme content, (ii) developing graduate attributes, (iii) simulate the business environment, and (iv) create an understanding of the different roles within a business environment. By creating this mobile game, students will be able to develop the necessary skills and experience required to function properly in a business environment.
