ABSTRACT
Academic burden and stress are still the main concerns of China's basic education, even after the implementation of "Double Reduction" policy since July 2021. Based on a survey of 7550 students from 45 primary schools in Wuhan, this study has explored how five different types of factors (family background, learning costs, social relations, learning experience, and teaching quality) can predict students’ academic burden and academic stress conducting multiple linear regression analysis. The study results revealed that, in background of "Double Reduction" policy, the time of finishing homework per day, private tutoring expenses, and hours of off-campus tutoring per week positively predict both academic burden and academic stress, yet social relations and perceived teaching quality are negatively correlated with academic burden and academic stress. Based on the research findings, the study provides several recommendations for further reducing academic burden and stress for primary-school students.
