Visual Style of Puss In Boots: The Last Wish

Published:28 February 2024Publication History

ABSTRACT

DreamWorks Animation faced a challenging task in creating the next chapter of the fan favorite Puss In Boots after more than a decade, aiming to create something fresh while also building on the established world and titular hero character. In "Puss In Boots: The Last Wish," Puss has exhausted eight of his nine lives and must team up with Kitty Softpaws on a perilous quest to recover the magical Wishing Star. Pursued by the menacing and enigmatic Wolf, they embark on an epic journey through a contemporary fairytale landscape.

This production session will explore the range of tools and techniques developed to produce the impressionistic look envisioned by Director Joel Crawford and Production Designer Nate Wragg, that emphasized the story's fantastical elements. Each department pushed the boundaries of typical VFX techniques, while keeping mostly within our existing workflows. They added edge breakup, graphic rims, textured FX, sharpened cloth folds, and updated character design, to bring this storybook-inspired world to life.
