ABSTRACT
Cognitive and functional impairment seriously affect the physical health of the elderly. Many factors such as demography and lifestyle will increase the risk of both. In recent years, visual impairment (VI) has received increasing attention as a risk factor for cognitive impairment and functional disability. Currently, interdisciplinary research in geriatrics and eye care has begun to prioritize understanding and improving function in older adults with VI. However, there is no systematic study on the interaction effect of visual impairment and other health factors on the function of the elderly. In this study, we used CLHLS 2018 follow-up data to identify risk factors affecting cognition and function in older adults by multivariate logistic regression. Then we analyzed whether there is an interactive effect that affects cognition and function when bad living habits and visual impairment coexist. Our findings suggest that advanced age, low intake of fruit and vegetables, and visual impairment are risk factors for cognitive and functional impairment. In addition, when poor eating habits and impaired visual function coexist, the risk of cognitive and functional impairment in the elderly increases. Therefore, the elderly with poor visual function should develop good eating habits at ordinary times to help reduce the risk of cognitive impairment and functional disability.
