Digital Inclusion and Democratic Participation: The experience of The School in Digital Culture training for teachers of Rio de Janeiro’s Municipal Public Education System: The experience of The School in Digital Culture training for teachers of Rio de Janeiro’s Municipal Public Education System

ABSTRACT

Nowadays, schools face the significant challenge of integrating digital technologies into a pedagogical project that allows students to interact autonomously, critically, and actively in their context. The teacher training course A Escola na Cultura Digital (The School in Digital Culture), created by MultiRio, a public company connected to the Municipal Department of Education of Rio de Janeiro (SME-RJ), contributes to the qualification of teaching activities in the media education perspective, emphasizing teaching about media and not just teaching with or through media. This teacher training has, as its premise, the promotion of students’ digital inclusion, viewing it as more than just granting access to the internet and digital devices, but also as the acquisition of communication and critical skills about the functioning of digital technologies. The course is part of MultiRio’s efforts to support the development of digital culture in the Municipal Education System - a network of 1.548 public elementary schools (from 1st to 9th grades) managed by SME-RJ.
