Analyzing Certified CS Teacher Capacity and Impact on Secondary School CS Education

Abstract

Certified Computer Science (CS) teachers play a crucial role in expanding the enrollment of secondary school students in CS courses and promoting the development of new skills. This poster presents a comprehensive analysis of secondary school CS education, focusing on teacher certification and student enrollment data from the academic years (AY) 2016 to 2021. Notably, our findings reveal a strong correlation between the presence of a certified CS teacher and increased CS enrollment in each AY within their school. However, the absence of a certified CS teacher, due to relocation or retirement, leads to the decline or discontinuation of the CS program in their school. Our research explores the capacity of certified CS teachers in our region and provides insights into the certification process beneficial to other researchers.
