Gratitude and Hope as Conditions for the Psychological Well-Being of Social Media Users

Published: 27 December 2023 Publication History

Abstract

Entering the digital era, there has been a lot of research on the impact of social media technology on humans. Various studies have shown that there are negative impacts from using social media, such as increasing upward social comparisons and decreasing psychological well-being, even though social media itself has many benefits for its users. In order for social media technology to bring more benefits to its users, it is necessary to develop positive attitudes and behavior. In this research, it is assumed that developing gratitude and hope is one way to avoid the negative impacts of using social media. This research aims to determine the role of gratitude and hope on the mental health of social media users. Participants in this study were early adult social media users, aged 18 to 40. This study used quantitative methods with survey design. The measuring tools used in this study were Ryff's Psychological Well-Being Scale for psychological well-being, The Gratitude Questionnaire-Six Item Form (GQ-6) for gratitude, and State Hope Scale for hope. This study used multiple linear regression as a data analysis method. The results showed that there was a significant role (F = 91.915, p < 0.001) of gratitude and hope in predicting psychological well-being. In addition, it was found that there is a positive role of gratitude and hope in predicting psychological well-being. Thus, the higher the level of gratitude and hope of early adult social media users, the higher their level of psychological well-being, and vice versa with a low level.
