Effects of Lossy Ground on Current Distribution for a VLF Horizontal Low-construct Antenna

Published:17 January 2024Publication History

ABSTRACT

This study evaluated the current distribution characteristics of a horizontal low-construct antenna in the very low frequency range based on the propagation constant of a horizontal low-construct antenna over lossy ground. Based on the approximate mathematical model of the transmission line and the boundary condition theory of the electric field, the analytical formula of the current distribution of the antenna is derived, and the different grounding modes of the antenna are transformed into the treatment of the antenna terminal function "θs", which is verified by the analytical method and the numerical simulation software FEKO. The results show that the numerical method and analytical method are in good agreement for the current distribution of the open-circuit antenna at both ends, and the current distribution formula for the grounded antenna needs to be approximated by adding a load impedance. This result confirms the feasibility of the analytical formula for the current distribution. In addition, when the antenna is coupled with the ground, the wave-belly current of the antenna is reduced by 23% and 30% respectively when the height of the antenna is increased from 5m to 15m and 30m.
