Design and Development of an International Chinese Online Peer Assessment System for Writing

Published: 30 May 2024 Publication History

Abstract

Peer assessment is regarded as a novel writing evaluation method that not only fosters students' reader awareness but also fully utilizes the diagnostic and guiding functions of assessment. Therefore, this research aims to address the issues of the lack of peer assessment platforms for writing instruction in international Chinese education and the limited application of peer assessment as a teaching method in our country. It is committed to building an "International Chinese Online Peer Assessment System" for international Chinese learners. Firstly, using expert consultation, consultations were conducted with nine experts to establish a peer assessment measurement index system comprising four primary dimensions, fourteen secondary dimensions, and twenty tertiary dimensions. The weights of each index were determined using the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP), and all indices passed the consistency test. Secondly, based on the aforementioned writing scoring criteria, a composition scoring system for peer assessment was developed using the JSP+Java Bean framework. It was designed in an Eclipse environment, implemented using the MySQL database platform and the JAVA programming language, and managed data in a Client/Server (C/S) model. This research aims to construct a fine-grained writing assessment scale for learners to act as assessors, with the hope of providing assistance to writing instruction and evaluation in international Chinese education and offering effective technological means to overcome the difficulties of "writing is difficult."
