Overview of partial discharge detection methods for XLPE cables

Published: 31 July 2024 Publication History

Abstract

The insulation performance of Cross Linked Polyethylene (XLPE) cables determines the safety and reliability of the power system, and the degradation of its insulation performance will directly threaten the stability of the whole system. The insulation defects of cables will lead to the generation of partial discharges in cables, and it is of great significance to detect the local discharge signals of the problematic cables in time through the means of cable local discharge detection to reduce the hidden dangers of cable insulation and the safe operation of power grids. This paper describes the cross-linked polyethylene cable PD generation mechanism, characteristics, PD common detection methods are introduced in detail and compared and analyzed, for cable PD detection research and application to provide reference.
