Abstract

"How many items should I have in my menus?""What is interesting about the NeXT user interface?""If I am generating my own "look-and-feel," what can I use from other systems?""What tools are available to help me generate user interfaces for a Sun under X? for a PC under Presentation Manager? for a Macintosh?""How do I evaluate whether the user interface on my system is any good?""What are the real computer-human interaction problems in industry that researchers should be addressing?""What would be a good PhD thesis topic in the area of human-computer interaction?"There is currently no journal or magazine that addresses these kinds of issues in a way that is of interest to both researchers and practitioners. At its meeting in Boulder, Colorado in October, 1989, the SIGCHI Publications Committee voted enthusiastically to investigate the founding of a new magazine on computer-human interaction to address the area of interface design and implementation. This article presents some thoughts about what this magazine might be like.
