ABSTRACT
This paper reports the findings of an informal survey of organizational structures in several academic computing centers. Small, medium, and large centers were studied and an attempt was made to identify the advantages and disadvantages or the various structures. Not unexpectedly, the most serious criticisms of their own structures came from small computing centers, where severe shortage of staff was listed as the biggest disadvantage. All sizes of computing centers claimed that dual responsibilities for both academic and administrative computing frequently caused severe organizational problems. Successful organizational structures are most often due to a cooperative staff and good lines of communication.
