ABSTRACT
The number of universities establishing electronic information systems attached to their campus networks is exploding. In fact many universities now offer several different types of systems on their network. These systems are merely a new way to present information that is also being distributed in more traditional ways (ex: verbal, printed, etc.).
Individual departments within universities recognize this new medium as an effective and efficient way to provide information to their target audiences. There are a tremendous number of organizations and departments within New Mexico State University seeking better ways to provide information about their services. NMSU/INFO is one new type of electronic information system used to distribute information. This type of system is often referred to as an “Bulletin Board”. NMSU/INFO was developed as a pilot project. It was done jointly with some key organizations at NMSU who were anxious to try this new medium.
This paper describes different types of information systems, evaluates the availability of public access systems, describes the objectives that guided the development NMSU's public access system (NMSU/INFO), speculate about NMSU/INFO's future directions, and finally discusses problems to be faced.
