How much paper do you need to support an electronic information system?

Published:01 August 1990Publication History

ABSTRACT

In 1986, when Indiana University released the Academic information Environment (AIE) — our online information system — it came with easy-to-use menus, online help, …and 115 pages of paper documentation.

In this paper I outline the evolution of IU's strategy in documenting the AIE. (We began with 115 pages of paper, and now support the system with a handful of quick guides.) I discuss our promotional efforts to introduce IU faculty, staff, and students to the AIE and to encourage them to continue using it; and I analyze the relationship between paper documentation and the AIE's online help system.
